A few notes for 2016

2016The new year starts with Mei Yi Foo and the Porto Casa da Música Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Pablo Rus Broseta, performing Diptych for Piano and Orchestra - a work composed in 2005 and dedicated to Manuel Dias da Fonseca. The new performance will happen at Casa da Música, Porto, on the 23rd of January. Three days later, Paulo Vassalo Lourenço conducts Descubro a Voz with the Gulbenkian Choir, at the Gulbenkian Auditorium, the same venue that will host the world première of Luís Tinoco‘s new orchestral score O Sotaque Azul das Águas (The Blue Voice of the Water), with the Gulbenkian Orchestra conducted by Susanna Mälkki. This performance (25th and 26th February) will be followed by a Brazilian première, by the OSESP – São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, conducted by James Gaffigan in early May.

May is also the month for the Portuguese première of Incipit – a work composed to celebrate the 450th anniversary of the Rio de Janeiro’s foundation and premièred by the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra in June 2015. The Portuguese performances will be conducted by Joana Carneiro with the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra (Lisbon, CCB, May; and Porto, Casa da Música, June).

2016 will also bring two more premières, one written for the Portuguese Dance Company‘s project Carnival, in June, with choreography by Victor Hugo Pontes and music direction by Cesário Costa. This première will involve a group of twelve Portuguese composers, each one writing one movement of a collective creation inspired by Saint-Säens’ Carnival of the Animals.

Other new works in progress include a new collaboration in October with Miquel Bernat and the Drumming Percussion Group, and the writing of a Cello Concerto to be premièred in 2017 (more news to be announced soon).
Happy 2016 to all!
